Item #22089/871 Lacquer Armchair with Protruding Crest Rail

One of a Pair of elm armchairs. Some of the original lacquer survives. Characteristic of this vigorous northern regional style, the armchair’s protruding crest rail curves upward into a spiral and the backsplat is carved into three panels, with the central panel being a deer and tree motif that symbolizes a wish for a long life.  19th century.  Shanxi Greater Region, northern China. Size:  23 x 17 x 47 high (seat height 21)
