Item 11204/919 Round-Back Chair, one of a pair

Chairs with a continuous curved back resembling a horse shoe are among the most impressive of Chinese chairs. They were used ceremonially and were reserved for persons of high rank and social importance. Most of the curved backs seem to have been made with five segments, whereas this one is constructed with three. The back splat has three carved panels. The top panel is carved in relief with confronting dragons and the center panel has pierced carving depicting a sage. Most of the original lacquer has worn off, but the pair of chairs retains a special presence and beauty. (The pair has only been cleaned; no wax or oil has been applied). Northern elm (yumu); Northern China; Circa 1800; Size: 25 x 25 x 39 (seat height is 20")
