Item 23008/553 Chinese Wood Carving
To wax poetic... This small carved panel was once part of a northern (Shanxi) style shrine. The size is 12 x 36 wide. The carving retains much of its original purple Zitan color. The shrine is part of a piece similar to the shrine cabinet that we have ____. This section would have been the center section above the opening of the shrine. This is sometimes called the valance or horizontal panel above the opening. In terms of iconography, this small fragment has many different symbols. There are flowers, scrolling grasses, pine trees, cranes, rocks and mushrooms. An excellent article by Terese Tse Bartholomew in the Autumn 1992 Journal of the Classical Chinese Furniture Society entitled "Botanical Motifs in Chinese Furniture" explains many of these symbols. This carving is 18th century. The carving is very refined and delicate and certainly comparable to the finest Huanghuali carving.
