Item 4786/691 Antique Chinese Shrine Cabinet SOLD
Pieces like this one make life worth living. First we'll start with the basics: the size is 48Wx25Dx69H; actual inside size is 14-1/2deep. The woods are mixed softwoods that are lacquered with different pigments to make the light colored wood look like TZU-T'AN.WOOD. This is sometimes referred to as ZITAN finishing. This shrine cabinet retains all of its'"PURPLE SANDLEWOOD" color. I have cleaned the cabinet and "brought up" the olde lacquer with TUNG OIL. On one of my last trips, I saw a more recent example of this form. The one I saw in Beijing didn't have the subtle refinement of our cabinet. As you may notice, in the larger views, the detailing is quite good. While the cabinet is only about 150 years old, the carving is exquisite. This piece is a very good example of the carry over of early QING standards. Another design aspect is the architectural form. This form is seen over and over again in both furniture and architecture.
