Item 23229/657 Tapered Antique Scholars Cabinet on Stand

This elegant, refined cabinet is in the taste of the Chinese literati. In reference to this particular piece, please refer to the excellent article by John Ang, "Identifying a Regional Style of Chinese Furniture", Journal of the Classical Chinese Furniture Society, Autumn 1992, pp.54-57, figs. 1-4. This tapered cabinet was probably made in the first half of the 19th century in FUJIAN Province in Southern China. The wood is NAN-MU a type of Chinese CEDAR. The secondary wood is cypress. The general condition is good. There are a few replacements., mostly on the base. All of the hardware is original, including the 4 interior drawer pulls. The board in the bottom of the base has been replaced. Some of the corner spandrels have been duplicated. The finish is also original. We have only cleaned and re-tung oiled the olde finish. The original lacquer finish is in fairly good condition. 19th Century, Qing Dynasty, southern China.
