Item 16377/616 Multi-paneled Cabinet SOLD

This multi-panel cabinet, which is an early traditional style, retains patches of the original thick black lacquer which over time has granitized. The two doors on wood pin hinges open to a large cavity with one shelf. Two of the bottom panels are drawer fronts, with the other two bottom panels being ‘false fronts’ having nothing behind them. Several of the panels are richly carved with floral motifs, while the top and outer edge have a moulding carved with a repeating ruyi lappet. There are 22 carved sections including the brackets and feet. Distinctive ‘leopard legs’ (baojiao) rest on a flower shaped pad. The subtle tapered sides of this cabinet are an important aesthetic detail. Pine wood; Shanxi province, northern China; Late 18th century; Size: 61 x 23_x 65
