Item 16286/723 Orange-Red Lacquer Cabinet SOLD

Very unusual form and construction. The wing like protrusions on the upper sides of the cabinet are called spandrels and are common on altar tables and coffers, but we have never seen spandrels on a full sized cabinet. These spandrels match the spandrels on altar table 16313. The small opening of the wood pin hinged doors provides access to storage for special items and to the coffer below, which would hold treasures or valuable items. The door plate and pulls are not original to the piece, but they are old. The painting of auspicious and religious symbols on this cabinet is done in a bold free style. Symbols represented wishes for something---such as a long, prosperous, healthy, and virtuous life with many sons. Among the many auspicious symbols are lotus flowers, a vase, pomegranates, peonies, a scroll, a brush, a dragon, a citron, a ruyi scepter and a vase with a peacock feather. The peacock feather designates official rank and was granted for meritorious service. Mixed woods; Gansu province, northern China; Circa 1800\; Size: 42 x 20 x 69
